This sweet boy wanted a pteranodon birthday cake, and it 'had' to have blue around the edges like in a picture he saw, so I gave in a bought some chemical-free, natural food coloring (easier than my traditional style of berry-dyed icing).
We had a dinosaur party with a few friends, which was kicked off with a fossil dig.
The kids were so sweet to share with each other as they discovered dino skeletons and crystals buried in the sand.
Then Grancy (my Mom) told the kids about the tar pits in California. Using a plastic tiger and some molasses, she illustrated how the animals would get stuck in the tar. Then I poured the tar (molasses) into a bag for the "ooey gooey game."
There were two bags containing candy and the one ooey gooey bag. Each kid got a turn being blindfolded and having to stick his hand into one of the bags. William went first and got molasses fingers! All the kids thought that was fantastic as they all broke into giggles. Either way, though, the kids got to pick a piece of candy for their goody bag. (And, p.s.- you might be able to tell that my mom and I are redheads right now :) I had some fun putting henna in our hair...)
At the end of the party I unleashed the children on a large mountain of cardboard boxes. "Build! Have fun!" and that's just what they did. They built houses and castles out of the boxes...
and then had an equal amount of fun destroying them.
The kids all had a blast!
Happy birthday to my wonderful William.
(and a Happy Mother's Day to all the Mommies out there!)
