Schooling with baby

Homeschool took a break for a week when Daniel was first born, but for week 2 we jumped back into our usual schedule.  I was ready to get back to it because I like doing school with William and Vera!  In many ways, the day is easier when we stick to our typical routine.  Mind you, the routine takes a bit longer with extra interruptions and limitations, but school has gone well the past week and a half.
Here, baby Daniel hangs out with us as we review Spanish.
Some new Spanish baby books make for an educational experience for all!
Justin was home the first week after Daniel was born (though sadly 2 1/2 of those days were in the hospital), and he is trying to take off an occasional day each week to help out as we continue to adjust.  One of those days was spent starting our newest project of transforming the back porch into our new dining room.  The kids got a lesson in framing houses that day!
I most enjoy doing science and history with the kids (English and math are done in workbooks that they can mostly accomplish on their own).  For science this week, we had fun with our study of light, which meant lots of playing with flashlights, mirrors, and water glasses (reflection/refraction).  We are also continuing a unit on snails, and we were all super excited to see snail eggs in our snail habitat on Monday followed by 8 baby snails on Tuesday!
My mom has been helping to pick up Silas and Patrick from preschool each day and then stays through lunch.  She brought some lobster claws over for the kids to try!  Vera was thrilled since she asks me every time we see the lobster tank at Publix if we can buy one.  Vera and Silas gave it a thumbs up, while William and Patrick gave thumbs down. "The only thing better than lobster," said Silas, "is cake!"
In history, we finished our study on ancient times and are moving on to the middle ages.
William thinks the Celts are pretty awesome (great, so he likes the idea of a war-like people who have no written language but like to display their victim's heads?!? Luckily I think he is more interested in drawings of the thatched roofs, plaid cloth, and blue body paint.), and he and Vera had a lot of fun making dragon brooches and double-headed axes to dress up as Celts.
So, here is to typing blogs while holding a baby, pinning on brooches while nursing, and changing diapers between checking math and English pages!  (I gotta say, the newborn stage is easier than when they go mobile! so I'll enjoy it.)
