Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?
A classic joke, right? But when we got chickens and they DID NOT cross the road, EVER, I thought "Hey wait, the chickens don't cross the road! This is kinda amazing, and why would they?"
For THREE YEARS our chickens have happily stayed in our yard. It's been great!
Well, about a week and a half ago our chickens crossed the road.
A fluke?
I love for them to roam free in our yard, so I was hoping it was an accident that wouldn't happen again. But, when you come home to cars slowed down in the street as your chickens doddle by, you know you've got a problem (and an embarrassed red face too).
We decided to only let them out for an hour or so in the evening to not give them so much time to wander away, but we forgot to close the coop last night and woke to ... that's right, cars slowing down on their morning commute to avoid our herd of chickens in the road. I ran out into the cold in my PJs mouthing "I'M SORRY!" to the car as I called "brock brock brock bi gooock" and they came racing towards me (at least they still come when called). A little bird seed to lure them and some more "brock brocks," and they were home again with the door securely shut.
So, I guess our girls have to stay cooped up a while for their own safety (and I really don't want to get a ticket for having chickens in the road).
but the question still remains...
Why did the chickens cross the road!!???
