School #1, #2, #3, and #4

We have been busy here at Winter Farm the last week!
Not with farming, but with school and family.
On August 7th (Justin and my 9th anniversary) William started 1st grade at Crabapple Lane Elementary, and Vera started PK4 at St. Paul Lutheran School.

On August 8th we excitedly drove to the airport to welcome Lea from Germany, who will be a part of our family for the 2014-2015 school year.
Let me just say that I must have picked the best kid out of the whole exchange program.  Lea is the sweetest girl, and we are so happy to have her in our family.  The kids adore her.  One of my favorite moments so far was watching Vera and Lea dance ballet together.
Lea is at Sandy Creek High School, and she had to hit the ground running straight into getting a schedule, school supplies, and starting class this past Monday.  I'm learning a lot about having a kid in high school too!  It had been about 11 years or more since I opened a locker...
Lastly there is Silas, who has started "Winter Farm School" with Mommy and a little friend two mornings a week.  I am loving teaching these two.  This first week the kids picked flowers and tomatoes, practiced opening and shutting boxes, crumpled paper (good for fine motor skills), set the table themselves, read books, played piano, and much more!

Despite the complete neglect our garden has received this year (and "garden" is a generous term, since it is really more of a jungle), we have harvested quite a lot of pumpkins and butternut squash.  Our cherry tomatoes and okra are doing ok once they find their way through the vines.  I'm thankful for the figs and muscadines that come back each year no matter how I treat them :).
I used one of our garden's pumpkins to make a pie.  It was Lea's first pumpkin pie!  There will be a lot of fun firsts to share with Lea this year.  We "Welcome!" our daughter, Lea, and if you want to come practice your German feel free to come visit sometime (I'm sure your German will be MUCH better than the way Justin and I sound!).

  1. Lea, Hier sind Sie willkommen! Welcome to the USA! I must tell you, when it comes to fun-loving, genuine, and considerate families, you have hit the jackpot. There's no doubt that your year here with the Winters will be filled with new experiences and adventures you remember forever. They are some of the best that Georgia has to offer...and there are some pretty good people in the other states too. :)
