Vera's backpack just came in the mail. We are quite excited! Not only is the backpack adorable, but by purchasing it a backpack and school supplies will be donated to a child in need in America.
When it dawned on me that we needed to purchase a backpack for Vera for school, I decided to do a quick search to see if there was an organization that would donate school supplies to kids in need or some other "give back" type of program. I was pleased to stumble upon statebags.com and felt really great about the purchase.
Typically, I would've headed out to Target to let my daughter pick a bag there, but after recently reading the book 7, I have been much more conscientious about how I spend money. It left me wanting to use my dollar vote wisely, and to hold the poor always in my heart. This is a really easy book to read (I read it with 4 young children, so that says a lot), so check it out if you are interested… There's a lot I could say about it, but we will leave it with the backpack. It is a start on spending wisely and considering the needs of others. It's a step in the right direction for me... Perhaps making vera use my old army green backpack from high school would have been even more responsible, but I didn't want her to resent my "green" choices.
I am trying to collect a list of other organizations that support fair trade, give back, or somehow serve the needy. If you follow me on Pinterest you can find more of these cool companies under "Green and Lovely," many of which were listed in the back of book 7.
Well, school is a week away! Off to enjoy the rest of summer.
LOVE it and wish I had known about this before I ordered N's backpack in the middle of the summer. Oh well, maybe by the time he needs another one, there will be lots of companies that do this sort of thing! Thanks for the great post reminder about our "vote." Going to look on pinterest for you green and lovely board.
