Happy Birthday to my firstborn, William, who is 9 years old!
(May 11th, which was Mother's Day the day he was born!)
As my mom pointed out, it is his last year in the single digits.
I've enjoyed teaching William at home this year, and I enjoy that he still likes being around me. :) He is respectful, bright, and creative. He has been putting a lot of work into karate; he currently has his blue belt (levels start at white, then gold, orange, green, purple, then blue...). He is tending his own garden and typically has at least two forts built in the yard. He enjoys trading Pokemon cards with his buddies at St. Nicholas Academy where he goes on Fridays, and he has lots of LEGO battles with his little brother, Silas. He has always loved time to play on his tablet or watch shows, but he is good about honoring our limits. He is patient with his siblings... most of the time, and when he isn't it only goes to show that he is human. He thinks and feels deeply, and seems to be a bit of an "old soul" as people used to also say about me. Mind you, he is a big bunch of goof the second he gets around his buddies, and even though it has been more difficult for us to get lots of time with those buddies as we homeschool this year, he values his friends greatly.
William loves doing projects related to our history lessons, so when we began covering ancient Greece he decided to make a Greek warrior helmet. I felt like it would be too complicated to construct his own helmet, so when he showed me his finished product I was so impressed! He decided to get rid of his remarkable work one day when he got rough with his brother and said that the armor made it too tempting for him to be war-like. I'm both impressed with the helmet and his self-discipline!
William wanted to try out a party away from home this year, so his birthday gift was a SkyZone birthday party.
The kids had a blast, except the one who busted his head on an obstacle course and had to get two staples; oh man! William said, "I had no idea the place would be so dangerous!"
William probably spent over half the time jousting with his buddies.
This gal, Vera, was beyond exhausted by the end of the night, and I couldn't keep Patrick from joining all the fun, so he was bouncing and crawling through foam pits too.
Here is William's 9-year-old interview:
