We have been having fun studying geology during science the past few weeks.
The kids had fun breaking open a geode and playing with some rock identification kits.
Silas has taken such a liking to our study that he wants his upcoming birthday party to be all about rocks and minerals.
I appreciate Pinterest helping me come up with science activities to compliment our lessons, and the kids appreciated it too when it meant studying different types of rocks using starburst candies! They pressed 4 candies together to make a sedimentary rock.
They applied heat and pressure to turn their sedimentary rock into metamorphic.
Finally, their starburst underwent extreme heat (microwave), which turned it into magma that cooled into igneous rocks. Patrick and Silas spent at least 30 minutes licking their plates.
William, Vera, and Silas each collected soil samples from different parts of our yard to examine the different clay, silt, and sand contents.
After shaking the soil with water and letting it sit for a day, we could see the particles settle in different layers.
I took advantage of Justin getting labor day off to field trip our way to a prime example of erosion in South Georgia.
Providence Canyon is a whimsical canyon... all created by bad farming practices.
The sandy soil washes away a bit more with each heavy rainfall.
So many nooks and crannies to explore!
A downpour shooed us out of the canyon... and continued to carve into the Earth's crust!
But our journey through the study of rocks and minerals continues!
